New England District Convention

On April 8, 9, and 10 several Key Clubbers from our club attended the annual New England Key Club District Convention, along with our three chaperones Lindy, John, and Mr. Jolles.  A big thanks goes out to all our chaperones.  There were several returning Key Clubbers from our club but many were going for the first time.  District Convention is held in Springfield, Massachusetts so the bus ride is very long.  With the help of a comfy bus and several movies to watch the trip didn’t seem so long.  Our club was lucky enough to have a bus all to ourselves so many of us, myself included, got to stretch out and have plenty of room.  The first night we were there we went to the opening ceremonies and the Keynote Address was given by Bin Robecki, who has spent the last several years building orphanages and schools in Vietnam.  The rest of the weekend was filled with caucuses, dances, workshops, and even a little line dancing.  Our Key Club proudly accepted several awards including  the Sandy Nininger Award given to Matthew Glover.  This award is given to an outstanding Key Club member who goes above and beyond to help their Key Club.  We also won an advisor award, 3rd place for our scrapbook, 1st place for our single-service, and many others.  Our first place single-service award for Every 15 Minutes will now go on to the International level where hopefully it will win once again.  All and all convention was a huge success and I for one can not wait until next year’s convention.

Major Emphasis Report:

The Samantha Skunk project is ready to be completed.  The committee is finalizing details for the May 27 presentation.  The Samantha Skunk project is actually only for K-2 graders, therefore we have come up with other ideas for things to do with the 3-5 graders and the 6-8 graders.  These ideas include games, questionnaires, activities, and facts.

Installation of the Board for Next Year

Before attending convention we voted in our board for next year.  The new board is President Kayla Soucy, Vice President Emily Freedman, Secretary Erika Brooks, Treasurer Amy Fothergill, Editor Kimberly Lyons, and Chairman of the Board Matthew Glover.  At our voting for next years board we also made Chris Glover the official bell ringer and gavel holder, Emily Freedman the scrapbook editor, and Amanda Purrington the co-scrapbook editor.

On Sunday, May 15 the new board for Colebrook along with the board from Canaan were installed.  At the installation the incoming Colebrook President , Kayla Soucy, welcomed everyone to the event and invited everyone to partake in the food  that was prepared.  Following the meal Kathleen Roderique, the incoming president from Canaan, led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance and the Key Club pledge.  Next Mindy Marquis, the New England District Bulletin Editor from Canaan, explained to the group what Key Club was all about.  Following this was the introduction of Kiwanians and Key Club Advisors done by John Falconer, a previous Kiwanis president.  Finally Kyle Robidas, the Lt. Governor of Division 8, installed the new board.  A closing was given by Kimberly  Lyons, Colebrook  Bulletin Editor, and everyone went home.  The event was attended by parents, key clubbers, and Kiwanians.
