Key Club News

Colebrook Academy Key Club

December / January

“Caring—Our Way of Life”

Editor’s Note

Well, this issue of Key Club News is going to cover the months of December and January.  With the holidays there hasn’t been a lot going on with Key Club.  We did the regular Key Club activities of Santa Comes to Town and Late Night Madness.  There has been quite a bit of progress with our major emphasis project, Samantha Skunk, and we’ve gotten quite a few ideas from the anti-tobacco meetings that several of our members are attending.  Recently our Lt. Governor, Paul Tarkleson, put on an officer training program for our district.  I attended, but was disappointed by the fact the many of the other Key Club officers in our district did not take advantage of this training.

Christmas Activities

Our Key Club does a lot every year to help out around the holidays.  This year was no different.  The local Kiwanis Club in Colebrook does a party for the children every year called Santa Comes to Town.  It gives children in the community the chance to come sit on Santa’s lap and tell him what they want for Christmas.  This year our Key Club helped out again by planning and doing arts and crafts activities with the children.  Some of the activities included were coloring Christmas pictures, Santa Clause puppets, and decorating paper stockings. Every year we do activities like this and the kids always seem to enjoy them and return each year to see Santa Clause.

This year we also helped out again with Late Night Madness.  This is a program that the Colebrook Downtown Development Association puts on every year.  It is a night of shopping throughout Colebrook with special sales and promotions.  This year Key Clubbers put on elf costumes and walked up and down main street passing out candy canes with discount tags for various stores and quit line mints to promote the non-smoking which is our Emphasis Project this year in Key Club.

We also sponsored a local family at Christmas time so that the children in that family would have clothes and toys in the new year.

Tsunami Relief

When our Key Club heard about the devastating tsunami that hit several southern Asian countries, we wanted to do something to help in any way we could.  We heard that the best way to help was to just send money.  Our club decided to send $125 right away to help, but we also hope to send more relief once we do some sort of fundraising later on.  We decided to send our money to the Kiwanis International Disaster Relief Fund.

Officer Training

Our Lt. Governor for Division 8, Paul Tarkleson held an officer training night for our division, which includes Canaan, Pittsburg, Colebrook, and Berlin. At this training Lindy Falconer trained the Secretaries and the Treasurers, Paul Tarkleson trained the Vice Presidents, and John Falconer trained the Presidents.  There was also a small meal prior to the training.  The training was successful, in my view, except for the lack of interest, since only four Colebrook officers and two Pittsburg officers showed up for the event.

Reminder:

Don’t forget to bring in a picture of yourself that you like to go on the member pages of our scrapbook.  Also anyone who signed up for a page or want to work on the scrapbook, see either Erika or Emily who are our scrapbook editors.

Upcoming Events:

Ž February 3—Non-smoking meeting at the hospital

Ž April 1, 2, and 3—District Convention

Ž April 13—Kick Butts Day (supports anti-tobacco use)

Major Emphasis Report:

Our major emphasis project this year is the Samantha Skunk project.  It is a project that promotes non-smoking in the schools.  We want to use the Samantha Skunk project for the younger grades and do other non-smoking projects with the older grades.  At a recent non-smoking meeting we learned that Kick Butts Day is April 13, which can be a cigarette butt clean-up day.  We also ordered bracelets to hand out and support anti-tobacco use and we handed out quit line mints at Late Night Madness.
